What to see by foot: Blackpool

Exploring the attractions along the promenade is most easily done on foot,
by tram or even by horse-drawn carriage.
Blackpool's main landmark is the iconic Tower, erected in 1891. An imitation
of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it was the tallest building in the country at
the time, standing at a height of 518ft. The Tower houses a circus, aquarium
and ballroom. The latter is famous the world over for its Wurlitzer organ that
was played by Reginald Dixon. The organ is built on a small stage on a pulley
so that it can appear to rise out of the ground.
Other relics of Blackpool's original 'elitist' attractions include the Winter
Gardens, with its barrel-vaulted ballroom, and the Baroque Grand Theatre on
Church Street. The Central Pier, by contrast, catered to the working classes
and signified Blackpool's new-found popularity with the regional mill town workers
and their families.
The Pleasure Beach to the south of the resort is the most popular free attraction
in the country. It was built in 1903 and many of the old rides are still popular
today. The River Caves was built in 1904 and the Grand National in 1935, both
still attract large queues. The Pleasure Beach has remained popular however,
by continually adding new attractions. The 'Big One' Rollercoaster built in
1994 was at the time the tallest in the world.
The town has many other attractions including a Zoo, the Winter Gardens, the
Opera House, Grand Theatre and three piers, and, of course, its stretches of
beach. The town continues to re-invent itself, as demonstrated by the marvellous
Illuminations, running from Starr Gate in the south to Cleveleys in the north,
and the Golden Mile strip of slot machines and promenade attractions.
