What to see by car: Blackpool

There are numerous pleasant routes leading out of Blackpool, both north and
south along the coast, as well as inland along the winding river valleys. The
road system is excellent, resulting in relaxing and rewarding driving experiences.
North along the coast lies Cleveleys, much less crowded than its neighbours.
There are beach bungalows which overlook the sea on the promenade, and in the
town stands the lovely Church of Christ, built in the 1830s. Continuing along
the coast you will reach Fleetwood, a popular little Victorian resort at the
mouth of the River Wyre with fine views over Morecambe Bay. It has an attractive
promenade, gardens and other attractions, yet retains its fishing port atmosphere.
Just east of Fleetwood lies Knott End, a small town at the head of the estuary.
Following the course of the River Wyre you will come across the charming towns
of Thornton, known for its 18th century windmill, Poulton le Fylde, an ancient
market town with cobbled streets and the historic Parish Church of St Chads,
and finally Garstang, another attractive market town beside the Lancaster Canal
and River Wyre.
South of Blackpool lie Lytham and St Annes, both quieter than their northern
neighbour and retaining a more traditional atmosphere. St Annes is most famous
for its world-class golf course, which hosts the Open every few years.
An enthralling tour through the Fylde hinterland can be made by following the
B5269 from Blackpool to Clitheroe, with interesting stops to be had at Longridge
(famed for Chingle Hall, claimed as being the most haunted house in England)
and Whalley (known for its 13th century Cistercian Abbey, protected as an Ancient
Monument). The route passes through the renowned Ribble Valley region, featuring
some magnificent scenery, before culminating at Clitheroe. Here you can enjoy
spectacular views of the town and valley from the Norman Tower and Keep of the
800-year-old Clitheroe Castle. The town is the gateway to the enchanting Forest
of Bowland, popular with hikers, birdwatchers and mountain bikers.
