Historical interest: Blackpool

The town name comes from the term 'Black Poole' after the peat-darkened waters
of a stream that runs from Marton Mere.
Blackpool was originally just a small fishing village, however towards the
end of the 17th century Edward Tyldesley, the squire of Myerscough and son of
the Royalist Sir Thomas Tyldesley, built Foxhall, giving Blackpool its first
house of any substance. During the 18th century, the gentry started to popularise
the area. In 1745 it is recorded that Elizabeth Byrom and her brother, Edward,
spent a day riding on the sands at Blackpool and Lytham.
Much of the major development was the work of Henry Banks who was known as
the father of Blackpool. He built the first holiday cottages, and in 1837, his
son-in-law Dr John Cocker, built Blackpool's first assembly rooms. This was
the Victoria Promenade, which included six shop units below. The bulk of the
building still stands at the north-west corner of Victoria Street and Bank Hey
Street.
However, it was with the coming of the railways in 1885 that the resort flourished,
which included the development of the tramway from Starr Gate near St. Annes
to Fleetwood. This ensured that visitors could enjoy the full range of attractions
that the town had to offer. The trams are still running over a hundred years
later. The town added to its collection of piers, and numerous attractions were
built to cater to the tourism boom, including the Victoria (South) Pier, Grand
Theatre, the Winter Garden's Empress Ballroom, Tower Ballroom, and, in 1897,
the Golden Mile.
The working classes who sustained Blackpool, started to desert it in the 1970s
as package holidays to Spain offered the weather that the resort couldn't always
guarantee. However, the town managed to survive by reinventing itself as a resort
for daytrippers, assisted by the provision of a large carpark running from one
end of the town to the other at the end of the motorway.
