Mini guide to Bolton

Bolton lies about 10 miles northeast of Manchester and Bolton Metropolitan Borough is actually part of Greater Manchester. It is one of the UK's biggest towns and has many attractions which include some excellent shopping and beautiful surrounding countryside.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities to be had in Bolton. The Middlebrook Leisure and Retail Park is one of the largest of its kind in the country. It draws people from all over the region and features branches of most major stores, restaurants and a cinema. In the same complex you will find the Reebok Stadium, which is home to Bolton Wanderers football club, one of the founding members of the football league. There are guided tours behind the scenes at the stadium that include a visit to the players' dressing room. There is also a museum chronicling the history of Bolton Wanderers.

There are other shopping centres and specialised retailers in town with much of the town centre being pedestrianised; as a result, it has received the Home Office Accredited Safer Shopping Award.

There are some sites of historical interest in Bolton including the Hall i' th' Wood, a part timbered merchant's house built in 1530, and Smithills Hall, an early Lancashire manor house that was built between the 14th and 18th centuries. Next door is Smithills Open Farm, which houses a collection of traditional farm animals including calves, shire horses, ducks, sheep and goats. Bolton Museum and Art Gallery is one of the largest in the region with displays on local and natural history and a fine collection of art with some nice examples of contemporary ceramics and British sculpture. Also worth a visit is Animal World and Butterfly House, where you can find butterflies, moths, insects and reptiles living in a tropical environment.

For those who prefer the outdoors, there is some great walking, picnicking and fishing to be had in Bolton's country parks. There are also a number of golf courses in the area. Restaurants in Bolton range from luxury to fast food. There is also a full range of accommodation from four-star hotels to bed and breakfasts.

Bolton is situated on the A666, A58 and the A676, while there is also a railway station and National Express coaches provide a service to the town.
