Geography of Bournemouth
    
Located in Dorset, Bournemouth enjoys a prime location on a gently sweeping
bay boasting seven miles of magnificent beach. This ensures its perennial popularity
as a seaside destination. It is also in relative proximity to other popular
south coast destinations.
The chief geographic feature of Bournemouth is the busy beach which sits below
a 50 foot bluff, separating it from the town. Most of the beach front is developed
and the town sits upon undulating land which has been cleverly developed to
give suburbs a good vantage point while parks occupy the valleys and depressions.
To the west of the Bournemouth lies the historic maritime city of Poole, located
on the enormous Poole harbour (the world's second largest natural harbour),
and the suburbs of the two have all but merged. You can practically follow the
beach from Bournemouth to the heads of Poole and cross over on the Pontoon to
the Isle of Purbeck.
East of Bournemouth is the smaller village of Christchurch separated by Christchurch
bay, where the Avon empties into the English Channel. Boscombe, Southbourne
and Branksome are all now incorporated into greater Bournemouth.
Bournemouth was originally (until 1972) part of Hampshire and is ten miles
from the magnificent New Forest. This 120 mi2 area of natural beauty has been
well preserved since its days as a hunting ground formerly used by William the
Conqueror. Today it is full of walking and cycling trails and continues to draw
plenty of visitors. Both Dorset and Hampshire are noted for their lovely landscapes
of rolling hills, forest and spectacular chalk cliffs.
The A31, which links to the A3, gives good access to the Poole/Bournemouth
area and makes it easy to reach the nearby towns of Southampton and Portsmouth
in the east and Weymouth to the west. The Isle of Wight also sits off this part
of the southern coastline.
