Bournemouth was purposely developed as a resort town in the early 19th Century
and therefore doesn't boast too many historic sites or any medieval architecture,
however it does have a grand Victorian feel to it. It is very much as summer
destination and the chief attraction is the seven miles of sandy beach, lined
with beach huts, cafes and beach shops. It also has an abundance of beautiful
parks and gardens, great nightlife, and a national park and heritage coastline
nearby.
The award-winning beach is perfect for a family holiday, with clean sand, clear
water and a variety of activities. Start out at the Waterfront Complex and the
fun fair on Bournemouth Pier. From here you can wander for miles along the gently
sweeping bay and pick your own private beach spot. Heading westwards you eventually
reach nearby Poole and the Heads, from where you can cross the mouth aboard
the pontoon to the Isle of Purbeck.
Also on the waterfront is the popular Oceanarium, a fully interactive experience
with feeding demonstrations and talks, a walk-through underwater tunnel and
exhibits to help you discover more about this fascinating underwater world.
You can also get a birdseye view of the entire beachfront area from the teetered
balloons which offer fantastic views of the sea, and surrounding countryside.
The Victorian architecture of the town centre provides a charming backdrop
for the excellent range of High Street shops and exclusive boutiques. Centre
of activity is the square, with its lovely camera obscura and mosaics. Clustered
around here are the restaurants, bars and nightclubs that bring Bournemouth
to life by night.
Bournemouth has a wide range of entertainment options, including the Pavilion
and Pier theatres, museums, leisure centre and sports clubs, and even an IMAX
surround vision cinema. The Bournemouth International Centre offers regular
theatre, opera and other performances.
The other great attraction of Bournemouth is its lovely parks which are scattered
around the urban area. These can be accessed from the waterfront and a popular
choice is the Stream, Heath and Woodland Walk. Following this self-guided trail
will take you to Bournemouth Gardens, Meyrick Park Golf Course, Coy Pond and
Talbot Heath.
