What to see by car: Bradford

A short drive from Bradford is the village of Haworth, home of the famous Bronte
sisters. Visit the Bronte Parsonage Museum, which contains period rooms with
original furnishings and displays the Bronte sister's personal treasure. The
steep Main Street in town is lined with historic inns, shops, and galleries,
leads to one of Britain's best preserved steam railways.
For those who like the outdoors, the spa town of Ilkley, situated in the Wharfe
Valley, is surrounded by glorious countryside. The southern slopes of the valley
form the famous Ilkley Moor. This is a wonderful area to spend the day hiking
and walking.
Three miles north of the city is Saltaire, a model industrial village and textile
mill. Salt's Mill was the biggest factory in the world when it opened in 1853.
It now houses art, craft and furniture shops, but the centrepiece is an entire
floor boasting the world's largest collection of works by the Bradford-born
artist, David Hockney.
East Riddleston Hall in Keighley is a 17th century merchant's home with a distinct
architectural details and a wonderful garden. The manor house is furnished with
textile, Yorkshire oak furniture and pewter. The wildflower and herb garden
are magnificent. Nearby is the Cliffe Castle, an elaborate mansion which was
built in the late 19th century for a wealthy textile mill owner. There is a
museum housed here that specialises in natural history and geology of the area,
with many interactive displays.
