Mini guide to Brighton

Britain's answer to the French Riviera and Spain's Costa del Sol may not be their equal in terms of sand and sun, but Brighton's wealth of attractions, proximity to London and its enduring charm continues to make it one of the UK's most popular summer holiday destinations.

The centrepiece of the town is the pebbly Brighton Beach, which is comfortable enough on a deckchair. On sunny days it attracts a crowd and the water is pleasant enough for a dip. Most of the outdoor cafes, fish n' chip shops, bars and tourist tack are found between the two piers. Palace pier hosts an amusement park and restaurants, while the derelict west pier is a sorry reminder of the city's glorious Victorian past.

The town boasts a charming assortment of restored Georgian buildings, such as the ornate Royal Pavilion. Located a few blocks back from the waterfront, the Pavilion is a flamboyant summer palace, with its lovely spiralled domes and exterior inspired from Indian architecture enclosing an equally stunning interior.

Brighton is a shopper's paradise found mainly among the 'Lanes' area, the bohemian centre of the town. The city also claims some of Sussex's best accommodation, most sumptuous cuisine, and most exhilarating nightlife.

Nearby are the West Sussex County Town of Chichester with its superb Gothic cathedral, the ancient Roman ruins of Fishbourne, and other pleasant coastal resorts such as Goring and Worthing.

Brighton is just an hour's drive from London, making it extremely convenient to access via road or rail. There are regular direct shuttle connections from all of London's international airports and frequent fast rails services to and from London Victoria station among others.
