What to see by car: Brighton

The Sussex region comprises the counties of East Sussex and West Sussex, each
with its own unique heritage, picturesque coastline and pleasant countryside,
and by car you can really experience the grandeur of the chalk cliffs that typify
this stretch of Britain's coast.
Nearby are the West Sussex County Town of Chichester with its superb Gothic
cathedral, the ancient Roman ruins of Fishbourne, and other pleasant coastal
resorts such as Goring and Worthing.
Immediately north, inland, is the Devil's Dyke, carved into the heart of the
Sussex downs, it's a lovely piece of English countryside and good for walking.
Good vistas are numerous and little villages, with pubs for the thirsty, are
dotted everywhere. Ashdown Forest is a particular highlight of the area.
Situated on the Dungeness Promontory, Eastbourne is the most convenient centre
for excursions to East Sussex's main attractions. Near the town are the magnificent
chalky headlands of Beach Head and the Seven Sisters. East along the coast lies
the historic maritime harbour of Hastings and the enchanting medieval town of
Rye, with its magnificent castle overlooking the Romney Marshes and Kent County.
Inland is the County Town of Lewes, brimming with historic architecture.
Outdoor enthusiasts will love the South Downs Way, a historic trial perfect
for hiking and cycling that winds its way from the Seven Sisters to the majestic
town of Winchester in neighbouring Hampshire.
Other picturesque sites worth exploring are the villages of Alfriston, Lindfield
and Petworth, the famous gardens of Leonardslee, Nyman's and Borde Hill, and
the historic houses of Great Dixter, Parham and Standen. Further afield, visit
the castles of Hever, Leeds and Arundel or the historic town of Royal Tunbridge
Wells.
Sussex's central location on the south coast makes excursions to nearby counties
easy to arrange. To the east lies Kent and the magnificent towns of Canterbury
and Rochester; to the west, Hampshire and the tranquil Isle of Wight; while
to the north are the rolling hills of Surrey.
