Mini guide to Bristol

Bristol, the largest city in the West Country, lies just across the Bristol
Channel from Wales and is a good base to begin a tour of western Britain. The
city has successfully combined its unique maritime and architectural heritage,
with some excellent tourist attractions, shopping and entertainment. Bristol
is easily explored on foot and this way it is possible to marvel at the medieval,
Georgian, Victorian and contemporary architecture gracing the city.
Although Bath is much more famous as a tourist mecca, Bristol has its own fame.
Bristol's name is carried around the world on products as Bristol Cream Sherry,
Bristol Blue Glass and the Bristol Sound. More significantly, it was a key port
and centre during the industrial revolution, and the legacy of the engineering
genius, I.K. Brunel can still be seen in the city. The Bristol Guild is the
place to head for pieces by Bristol artists and Bristol Blue glassware, which
is still manufactured by hand in the city.
The 'Quarters' of Bristol have their own special ambience, with cafés,
restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs carrying a certain style and warmth unique
to their area. Some of the best pubs are along King Street and the many wine
bars and restaurants can be found on Park Street, Queen's Road and Whiteladies
Road.
The elegant shops of Bristol's West End, Whiteladies Road and Clifton Village
are perfect for those looking for designer clothes, art and crafts, antiques
and jewellery. In historic Corn Street, the stalls of St. Nicholas Markets opened
in 1745 and sell hand crafted goods, antiques, jewellery and haberdashery to
this day. All the big name stores can be found in Broadmead and the Galleries,
or on the edge of the city at The Mall. The best antiques markets are the Bristol
Antique Centre, at Brunel Rooms, Clifton Antiques Market and New Antiques Centre,
in Clifton.
Bristol International Airport is the primary access point for Bristol. But
the city also boasts two mainline stations, which have frequent service from
London and elsewhere in Britain. National Express coaches also has frequent
service to and from London.
