Geography of Bristol

Bristol is the largest city in the south west of England, with a population
of approximately half a million. The city lies between Somerset and Gloucestershire
and has been politically administered by both counties at various times. However,
Bristol is historically a county in its own right and is properly entitled the
City and County of Bristol.
The city was originally bounded by walls and rivers, making the limited land
available in Bristol expensive. As a result, when monasteries, priories, friaries
and hospitals were founded, they were built outside the walls on sites granted
by local landowners.
Bristol lies at the confluence of two rivers: the Avon and Frome. Although
this geography was originally good for strategic defence, by the 13th century
the available quayside area was considered too small. It was decided to develop
a new harbour by diverting the course of the river Frome. This was a huge engineering
task and was completed around 1248. The course of the diverted river is no longer
open to view in central Bristol. The Frome now passes through the Mylnes Culvert
which runs from Stone Bridge down under the Centre, then along Narrow Quay and
enters a syphon below the Floating Harbour to discharge to the Avon just upstream
of Gaol Ferry Bridge.
