What to see by foot: Bristol

The Bristol Cathedral, which used to be an Augustinian abbey, began its life
in the 12th century and is an excellent example of a 'hall church'. Another
church worth visiting is the St. Mary Redcliffe Church. It is one of the finest
examples of Gothic architecture in England and known as the 'pride of Bristol'.
The American Chapel houses the tomb and armour of Admiral Sir William Penn,
father of Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn.
The Exploratory is a hands-on science centre housing over 150 exhibits which
can be touched and experimented with. The centre is a fun visit for all ages,
covering the whole spectrum of science from earth, environment, colour, chemistry,
physics etc.
The University Botanic Garden cultivates some 4,500 plant species from over
200 plant families within its five acre site. This diversity of plants is unique
and not found elsewhere in the Bristol area. Special collections include: rare
native and threatened plants of the South West, Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden,
South African and New Zealand collections, plus many plants cultivated under
glass.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge, built in 1864, spans the Avon Gorge and has
become the symbol of the city of Bristol. It was designed by the architect,
I.K. Brunel, who died 5 years prior to the completion of the bridge. The work
of this highly regarded industrial revolution engineers is revealed in the Visitor's
Centre which has a scale model of the bridge on exhibit, as well as the story
of the construction of the bridge.
