What to see by car: Bristol
    
Just outside Bristol, the lovely, quiet country side unfolds, with woodlands,
meadows, coastlines and quaint villages. There are many open spaces to enjoy
around Bristol, such as the Cheddar Gorge and the Avon Gorge. Bristol is also
linked to Bath by cycle path, which follows the course of the old Midland Railway,
as well as a walking path that follows the course of the Avon.
Only 13 miles east of Bristol lies the golden city of Bath. Designated by UNESCO
as a World Heritage Site, Bath is famous for its Roman baths, the beautiful
Abbey and other architectural beauties.
Just north and east of Bristol lie the Cotswold Hills and the countryside of
South Gloucestershire. There are many quaint villages and sights to explore
in this lovely area. Thornbury is a traditional market town with the nearby
Oldown Country Park's woodland walks, adventure trails and working farm to explore.
Just north of Thornbury lies the valley of the River Severn, with its two breathtaking
bridges. Other nearby villages worth exploring are: Berkeley, Slimbridge, and
Tetbury.
A few miles to the west and south of Bristol lies Weston-super-Mare, one of
England's traditional seaside resorts. The Sealife Centre on the seafront, the
wonderful beach and the Helicopter Museum at nearby Locking combine to make
a great day out from Bristol.
Further inland from Bristol lie the Mendip hills, an area recognised for its
outstanding natural beauty. The main attractions here are: the Show Caves in
Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole at Wells.
Also nearby and worth a visit are Glastonbury, the birthplace of Christianity
in England, Shepton Mallet, an old Roman settlement, and Frome, the largest
of the Mendip towns with a flourishing cloth industry.
For those who want to see puffins, Lundy, which means 'puffin isle' in Norse,
is the place to go. The island is just 3/4 mile long by 1/4 mile wide and situated,
sometimes out of sight of land, in the middle of the Bristol Channel. There
are ships that depart frequently to visit the island.
