Mini guide to Brixham
Brixham has a fantastic location set among steep cliffs at the southern end of
Tor Bay in Devon. Its interesting old town and busy, colourful harbour make it
a popular family resort.
Loaded with facilities and attractions, Brixham boasts a rich history. The
seaside town is famously known for its connection with William of Orange, who
landed in Brixham in the late 17th century while on his way to London, and a
statue commemorates his visit. Brixham also boasts some exquisite walking terrain,
with the Berry Head walk offering unrivalled views of the sea and coastline.
Brixham town is also good for a stroll and its narrow streets are lined with
craft shops, galleries and traditional pubs, as well as a multitude of other
sights. The Heritage Museum is worth a look for its maritime exhibits and collection
of old photographs, while the famed heritage fleet is a fleet of wooden sailing
trawlers that marks the yesteryears of the fishing industry in Brixham.
There is an abundance of tourist shops in Brixham and some superb seafood restaurants,
not to mention numerous cafés and pubs dotted around the harbour. Brixham
also boasts several beaches, the best of which is considered to be at nearby
Broadsands, not far from Churston village, where you can also find a golf course.
Nearby Paignton has long beaches, beautiful botanical gardens and a bustling
town, while Torquay, a little farther north, is a lively resort with an endless
array of things to do. In the other direction, history rich Dartmouth can easily
be accessed from Brixham by boat aboard the Brixham Belle, an exciting experience.
Brixham is easily reached by road with both the M4 and M5 motorways connecting
Brixham with London. Trains run all day from London's Waterloo and Paddington
stations to Paignton, from where frequent buses services run to Brixham. National
Express coaches also serve Brixham from London with daily services, while Bristol
International Airport is the nearest air terminal for those arriving by air.
