Mini guide to Bude
The charming Cornish town of Bude is blessed with some of the most gorgeous scenery
in the British Isles and the region in which it is located has been designated
as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With its stunning Atlantic coastline,
wonderful climate, numerous heritage sites and myriad of enticing shops and restaurants,
Bude is one of the UK's most attractive tourist destinations offering visitors
a truly peaceful and relaxing holiday experience.
Bude's superb sandy beaches are its most alluring attraction, stretching for
miles along the Cornish coastline and offering spectacular views of the powerful
breakers which provide the region's excellent surfing opportunities. Lifeguards
man the beaches during the summer months and a flag system indicates the level
of safety for swimming.
The Bude Canal is a unique feature of the town, constructed to carry goods
to the sea and to transport mineral rich sands from the coastline to inland
areas. The canal stretches from the harbour to the town of Launceston and offers
excellent fishing and sailing opportunities.
The region is overflowing with possibilities for leisure and recreation, offering
some of the best beaches and surf in the UK, an outstanding golf course and
an extensive web of hiking trails. The wetlands and recreational areas surrounding
the Bude Canal provide fabulous opportunities for bird watching, walking, jogging
and cycling. In recent years, canoeing and kayaking on the canal and river have
become popular activities and abseiling is available for those who fancy a touch
of adventure.
The town of Tintagel is located to the south of Bude and is famous for being
the legendary home of the wizard Merlin and the birth place of King Arthur.
Tintagel Castle is one of the region's finest attractions, shrouded in legend
and mystery.
Bude is accessible by car via the A39 which connects with the A30 at Indian
Queens. The A30 in turn links up with the A3090, A3072 and M5. Regular bus and
coach services run between Bude and other parts of the country and a rail station
is located at nearby Exeter St David's, which is linked to Bude by bus.
