Mini guide to Bury St Edmunds
Beginning its life originally as a Saxon development, Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk
is a busy market town with a long and interesting history, much of which is based
around the church and various religious figures. As a tourist destination it has
a wealth of attractions ranging from historical to natural and contemporary, and
is popular with visitors throughout the year.
The town's cathedral is Bury St Edmunds' focal point and a popular visitor
attraction. Adjacent to the equally popular Abbey Gardens, the church building
known as St Edmundsbury is curiously still under construction, creating an interesting
mix of old and new.
The Abbey Gardens are one of Britain's best examples of formally kept garden
locations. Amid beautifully tended lawns are colourful flowerbeds and lovingly
nurtured bushes which will delight laypeople and keen horticulturalists alike.
Aside from the gardens, there are tennis courts for the energetic or putting
and bowling greens for those seeking more leisurely pursuits.
Entertainment options in Bury St Edmunds are far from scarce; in fact, the
town has something of a reputation for being an arts centre. The Theatre Royal,
housed in a superb restored Georgian building, is home to some of the UK's best
stage productions including opera, dance, music and drama. Options for eating
out are varied and plentiful with a range of international establishments as
well as those offering traditional English fare.
Ickworth House, Park and Gardens are just a short distance from the town and
offer an interesting day away from the trappings of the town. The House is a
magnificent example of 18th century architecture and the surrounding parkland
offers a slice of nature typically resplendent of National Trust properties.
By car, Bury St Edmunds is located just off the A14, while the town has its
own railway station with connections to some major cities. Stansted International
Airport is the nearest international air connection.
