Geography of Cambridge

Cambridge is located on the River Cam in the lovely county of Cambridgeshire,
approximately 60 miles north of London. The ancient fens lie to the north of
the city, while deep forests stretch to the south. The city is within easy driving
distance to the nearby towns of Colchester, Newmarket, Huntington, Peterborough
and Ely, as well as London.
The flat gentle countryside of fields displaying shades of black, brown, yellow
and green that typify the changing seasons of a rich agricultural region under
the vast expanse of sky has something of a poetic and lonely atmosphere about
it. The air is unpolluted and the sky plays a vital role in the desolate landscape,
changing from brilliant blue to rainbow arc to billowing storm clouds silhouetting
tree clumps and occasionally windmill sails.
The fenland north of Cambridge, some of which was drained in the 17th century
leaving the land fertile and suitable for the farming of crops, provides a glimpse
of what this desolate marsh area was like for centuries.
Since the age of the Romans the fens were a land of tufts of solid ground rising
above shallow water, reed-beds, pools and mires. The rivers made the fens a
vast inland waterway navigable only in shallow-bottomed boats, the forerunners
of today's punts.
