What to see by foot: Cambridge

Cambridge has been described as one of the most beautiful places in Britain,
and manages to combine its role as an historic city with a world-renowned university
(whose famous alumni include Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton and
Salman Rushdie among others) as well as an internationally-acknowledged centre
of excellence for technology and science.
Visitors flock here to visit the magnificent colleges, including Trinity College,
and the gothic Kings College Chapel, experience the tranquil atmosphere of the
River Cam, browse in the many fabulous bookshops, and participate in the exciting
festivals each summer. Many of the city's places of interest can be visited
on foot.
Most of its thirty-one colleges are lined in a row with gardens backing on
to the River Cam. The grass-covered bank is consequently known as The Backs,
and it's a picturesque place to walk along, especially in the spring when the
bank is carpeted with daffodils. There you can take a punt (a flat-bottomed
boat) along the river and relax among one of the great historic seats of learning
in the world. The colleges are open for visitors to walk around and admire the
magnificent architecture. At King's College Chapel, the best known of all Cambridge
buildings, you may be lucky enough to hear the world-famous choir. St Bene't's
Church, on St. Bene't's Street, is the oldest building in Cambridgeshire; in
fact, its Saxon tower was built in 1025. Inside there is a fascinating brass
rubbing centre.
Cambridge has a wealth of museums and galleries covering a wide range of interests.
The Cambridge and County Folk Museum houses rural and domestic equipment dating
from the 17th century onwards, while the Whipple Museum displays scientific
experimentation equipment. The Cambridge Contemporary Art Gallery displays paintings,
sculpture, hand-made prints, textiles and crafts created by local artists.
The busy town centre caters to the large student population, and not only is
it filled with students riding their bicycles but there you will also find many
of Cambridge's trendy cafés, fine restaurants, excellent pubs and bars,
and quality shops, including the unfeasibly large number of bookshops.
