More than 2000 years ago, at the meeting of dense forests to the south and
trackless, marshy Fens to the north, was the lowest reliable fording place of
the River Cam, or Granta. Over the next several centuries, different peoples
occupied this land, from an Iron Age Belgic tribe in the first century, to the
Romans and Saxons, then the Normans under William the Conqueror. This land was
where the city of Cambridge is now.
The first historical trace of Cambridge recognized as a university town was
in 1209 when a number of scholars migrated from Oxford to Cambridge after a
conflict with Oxford townsmen, during which many students were hanged!
Its first recognition came in a royal writ to the Chancellor of Cambridge in
1230. The first college, Peterhouse, was founded in 1284 and another nine followed
during the 14th and 15th centuries. But the university did not achieve real
eminence until the 16th century Reformation when it produced Tyndale, Coverdale,
Cranmer, and Latimer colleges. Henry VI took nearly a quarter of the medieval
city for King's College, while Henry VIII united two existing colleges to create
Trinity College, grand enough to rival Christ Church.
After a prolonged period of stagnation, Cambridge was revived by its growth
as a centre of scientific research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Women's colleges were founded in the mid-19th century, but women did not receive
full academic status until 1948.
Today it also prospers as a popular tourist town, and continues to have a lively
atmosphere.
