Mini guide to Cardiff

Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is a busy commercial and university city, with a striking city centre castle, wonderful national museum and art gallery, coupled with a redeveloped dock area and beautiful architecture. Cardiff is also a good base, with excellent transportation connections, from which to explore the rest of Wales.

Cardiff has been undertaking a huge regeneration project to transform Cardiff Bay. The Cardiff Bay Barrage has been built across the rivers Taff and Ely, to create a 500-acre freshwater lake to provide moorings for 200 yachts. Nearby, Mermaid Quay is a complex of shops, restaurants and bars, designed to bring a festival atmosphere to Cardiff Bay's Millennium Waterfront. There is also the Wales Millennium Centre, a purpose-built arts centre and the home of the Welsh National Opera. Cardiff is even bidding to become the European Capital of Culture for 2008.

The bulk of Cardiff's eateries are located along Cathedral Road and Newport Road. It is easy to find Welsh specialities, such as rarebit and laverbread in the city centre, just look for the Flavours of Wales 'hungry dragon' sign. The city also boasts a range of international eateries, many trendy coffee shops and bistros. Rugby is Cardiff's most popular form of entertainment and you shouldn't miss visiting the Millennium Stadium, but there is also theatre, an arts centre and a pop arena for non-rugby fans.

Travel to Cardiff is easy, with excellent motorway connections for those coming by car, as well as rail and coach links. Cardiff International Airport is located near the city centre and although caters mainly for charter flights, there are regular flights from Britain.
