Geography of Cardiff

Cardiff is located on the south coast of Wales and water has been an important
part of the development of the city. Three rivers flow through the South Wales
Valleys, then Cardiff, after rising in the hills to the north. The Taff runs
through north and central Cardiff by the side of the castle grounds and The
Millennium Stadium, before entering Cardiff Bay along with The River Ely from
the west of the city. The third river, The Rhymney, flows through the east of
the city directly into the Bristol Channel, which is in turn fed by the waters
of the rivers Severn and Wye.
The docks in Cardiff were vital to growth during the Industrial Revolution,
but fell into disuse and disrepair, as the mining and shipping industries declined
over the years. By the early 1980s Cardiff Bay had become a neglected wasteland
of derelict docks and mudflats. The Cardiff Bay Development Corporation was
set up in 1987 to regenerate the 1,100 hectares of old derelict docklands of
Cardiff and Penarth. It was part of the British Governments 'Urban Development
Programme' to regenerate particularly deprived and run-down areas of British
inner cities.
The Bay is now full of life, with a range of facilities, housing shops, restaurants
and theatres, with more in the works. Cardiff's Bay area is now seen as a major
success story of rejuvenation and a model that can be replicated elsewhere.
