Mini guide to Cardigan
Founded in 1093 by Roger de Montgomery, Cardigan is a Welsh town with an interesting
mix of medieval and maritime history. Whether it's exploring historic and ancient
sites you are interested in, fishing or paddling in the beautiful clear waters
of Cardigan Bay, or simply strolling along scenic coastal paths; there's something
for everyone in Cardigan.
Cardigan Castle is perhaps the most famous visitor attraction and is a monument
with an intriguing and troubled history. Erected in 1100 by Gilbert de Clare,
the building spent the following century regularly changing hands between the
Normans and the Welsh. Nowadays, its well preserved magnificence is open daily
for public viewing.
Take a trip to the Cardigan Heritage Centre and delve into the town's history
via static and interactive computer displays. The centre has a riverside café
and it regularly changes its exhibitions on local themes. The nature reserve
at the Welsh Wildlife Centre is well worth checking out, while for some amazing
nature, check out the Felinwynt Rainforest & Butterfly Centre.
For urban entertainment, the town offers some charming traditional shops, inns
and eateries set in original Georgian and Victorian buildings. Golf fans can
play a round at the course just north of Cardigan at Gwbert-on-Sea. For an evening's
entertainment there are some charming local pubs, while the town's theatre features
live shows and doubles as a cinema showing all the latest releases.
A short journey south of the town brings you to St Dogmaels, an area with an
old fashioned and still working water mill, as well as the ruins of an ancient
abbey. Overlooking the River Teifi is Cilgerran Castle, while also nearby is
the ruined remains of a once magnificent medieval structure.
The A487 is the main road into the city with northerly connections from the
M62, M6 and M56 motorways, and southerly connections from London along the M4.
The nearest rail connection is at Fishguard, from where you can catch a bus
to Cardigan. Cardiff has the nearest international airport and is about a two
hour drive away.
