Mini guide to Chatham

Chatham and the surrounding Medway area are steeped in rich cultural heritage and distinguished history. Charles Dickens grew up in Chatham and nearby Rochester, and many buildings and places in his novels can be found in Medway. Chatham boasts excellent facilities and a tranquil position on the Medway River.

The biggest attraction in Chatham is the historic Royal Dockyard, a key centre for the nation's defences for over 400 years that is now a heritage centre with numerous significant buildings, three warships and a variety of maritime attractions. It was here that the HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, was built. The Museum of the Royal Dockyard documents the town's proud naval history and traditions.

Fort Amherst was built in 1756 to protect the dockyard from a landward attack and features numerous chambers and tunnels, shelters, barracks and guardrooms. It boasts a picturesque setting popular among picnickers and walkers alike. The Kingswear Castle coal-fired paddle steamer was built in 1924 and now offers visitors scenic river trips along the Medway and the Thames rivers.

Chatham boasts a wide range of restaurants offering dishes from around the world, as well as numerous pubs providing traditional food, drink and entertainment. There are also plenty of shopping opportunities, with Dockside Outlet Centre home to over 50 shops and restaurants.

Nearby Rochester Castle is one of the best preserved Norman castles in England and boasts an impressive keep, while Rochester is home to both Restoration House, known as Satis House in 'Great Expectations' and Eastgate House, known as Westgate House in 'The Pickwick Papers'. Close by is Rochester Cathedral, the second oldest cathedral in England, having been a place of worship for 1,400 years; while the Guidehall Museum was built in 1687 and highlights the history of Medway.

Chatham is located close to the M2 motorway at junction 2, while Chatham Railway Station offers both local and regional train services. Coach travel is also available to all major destinations.
