Mini guide to Cheltenham

Cheltenham lies close to the South Wales border and was developed as a spa town in the 18th century. It is famous for its beautiful Regency architecture, its spa waters and the 'Romantic Road' to the Cotswolds.

Cheltenham earned its title 'Regency' with a visit by George III and since then there have been a host of noble and royal visitors. The heritage of those bygone times can be seen in the town's regency architecture, with intricate ironwork a feature of distinctive townhouse facades. Cheltenham is known as the most complete regency town in England. Most of the town centre lies within a conservation area of outstanding importance and one of the best ways to enjoy it is to take an organised walking tour.

Relaxing is easy here and in particular you can wallow in a therapeutic spa treatment at the Chapel Spa or sample the waters at the Pittville Pump Room. The Holst Birthplace Museum in Clarence Road details the life of the famous composer.

The Promenade is one of the most stylish shopping boulevards in England and is home to some of the best-known fashion houses, shoe shops and bookstores, while the High Street contains fashionable shopping arcades such as the Regent Arcade. A truly continental flavour can be found in the Montpellier and Suffolks areas, where there is an abundance of specialist boutiques and gift shops, together with pavement cafes and fashionable wine bars.

Cheltenham is a great place to explore South Wales or take a leisurely drive through the Cotswolds taking the Romantic Road. Cheltenham is also convenient for visiting Gloucester and Bristol, where you can drive over the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Lying close to the M5 motorway makes Cheltenham a very accessible destination by car and it is serviced by InterCity trains having direct services from London, Birmingham and Manchester ever hour. Heathrow is only 83 miles away and Birmingham International airport is less than 50 miles.
