Geography of Chester

Cheshire is a palatine and maritime county of England, bounded on the Northwest
by the Irish Sea, and bordering on the counties of Lancaster, York, Derby, Stafford.
Towards the Irish Sea, a flat peninsula, the Wirral, lies between the estuaries
of the Mersey and the Dee.
A low ridge of sandstone hills runs north from Congleton, near the East border,
and another extends from the neighbourhood of Malpas to Frodsham, near the estuary
of the Mersey. The chief rivers are the Mersey, the Bollin, the Weaver, and
the Dee.
There are numerous excellent dairy farms, on which the celebrated Cheshire
cheese is made; also extensive market gardens, the produce of which is sent
to Liverpool, Manchester, and the neighbouring towns. Salt has been long worked;
it is obtained from rock salt and saline springs; the principal works are at
Nantwich, Northwich, and Winsford. Coal and ironstone are worked in the districts
of Macclesfield and Stockport. There are manufacturers of cotton, silk, and
ribbons, carried on chiefly in the towns of the East division; and shipbuilding,
on the Mersey.
In Chester and surrounding districts are numerous parks, gardens, woods and
forests. Chester's most popular expanse of greenery is lovely Grosvenor Park,
comprising sixteen acres. The park is widely regarded as one of the finest and
most complete examples of Victoria Parks in the north west of England, if not
internationally. The park, being very close to the river and to open countryside,
abounds in wildlife, including grey squirrels, mallard ducks, waterhens, robins,
songthrushes, blackbirds, spotted flycatchers and tree creepers - a shy furtive
bird which may be seen walking up tree trunks in search of insects.
Other parks in the city include Alexandra, Westminster Park and Water Tower
Gardens, while to the northeast lie Delamere Forest Park, Vale Royal and Alderley
Edge. Vale Royal's peaceful and unspoilt countryside is a well kept secret,
providing a rich variety of scenery to explore from cattle-grazed valleys threaded
with canals and rivers, to sandstone hills and expansive woodlands.
