What to see by foot: Chester

Compact, beautiful and the most complete walled city in Britain, Chester is the historic gem of North West England. Cestrians - as Chester natives are called - have been welcoming visitors for 2,000 years and pride themselves not only on their skill as hosts, but also on the special warmth of their hospitality.

A walk around the walls makes a good introduction to Chester and takes about two hours while the lazier visitors take a Guide Friday bus tour around the city. Another major landmark and attraction is Chester Cathedral. It has been a place of worship since the 10th century and the present cathedral (with much reconstruction over the years) was built between the 13th and 15th centuries.

Chester's black and white half-timbered buildings have an appearance harking back to medieval times, most are in fact Victorian. The original fortress city of Deva (named after the River Dee) was built by the Romans to keep out the Welsh barbarians and, although the Romans left in the 5th century, it wasn't until the 1300s that the Welsh were considered to be less of a threat. The Dewa Roman Experience is amongst Chester's many Roman attractions. It has the largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, the Roman Garden and Minerva's Shrine.

The Grosvenor Museum and Heritage Centre are good ways to explore Chester's past. Other major attractions include Chester Zoo - the largest zoo in the UK with over 5,000 animals in spacious enclosures, set in 110 acres of gardens, the 'On the Air' Broadcasting Museum, the Cheshire Military Museum and the Toy and Doll Museum.
