What to see by car: Chester

There is plenty in the surrounding Cheshire region to make exploring the countryside by car pleasant and rewarding.

Most of the historically important towns lie to the northeast and east of the city. Heading toward Manchester, the first worthwhile destination is Northwitch, gateway to the enchanting Vale Royal countryside. You can either continue heading northeast, stopping at Winslow (lovely Dean and Bollin river valleys), Alderley Edge (stunning views across Cheshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire), Cheadle (picturesque 16th century church of St Mary), Bramhall (15th century Bramall Hall), Stockport (ancient Parish Church of St. Mary's with Gothic architecture and rare stained glass), and Bollington, lying near the edge of the beautiful Peak District.

Alternatively, head east to the magnificent 19th century Cholmondeley Castle Gardens of Crewe, the quaint 15th century Parish Church and Roman ruins of Middlewich, and the ancient market town of Conyleton.

Northest lie the Dell and Mersey estuaries, with the lovely Wirral district situated in between them, and boasting a multitude of interesting attractions, including historic Fort Perch Rock and the excellent Seacombe Aquarium.

To the west are the Clwydian Range and the remote regions of northern Wales, great for outdoor enthusiasts, with endless opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, camping and fishing.
