Historical interest: Chester

Chester began when the Romans built a fort called Deva next to the River Dee
some time around 70 AD. Roman Chester was also a busy little port and luxuries
such as wine and finely made pottery were imported. However, in the 4th century
Roman civilisation began to break down. People drifted away from the towns and
they were left almost or wholly abandoned.
About 617 AD a battle was fought at Chester between the Welsh and the Saxons.
The Saxons won and Chester fell into their hands. The Saxons gave Chester its
name. They called any group of Roman buildings a caester. In time this was corrupted
to Chester. In the early 10th century Chester was made into a burh or fortified
settlement. Soon it was a flourishing little town with a mint and a weekly market.
In 1506 Henry VII gave Chester a great charter. It was made a county in its
own right separate from the rest of Cheshire. In 1541 the abbey was made a cathedral.
In the 16th and 17th centuries Chester was known for its leather industry. There
was also still a wool industry.
In 1642 came civil war between king and parliament. Chester supported the king
and earthwork defences were erected around the town to protect the suburbs that
had grown up outside the walls. Finally on February 1643 the people of Chester
bowed to lengthy sieges of the town by the parliamentarians and gave in.
During the 18th century Chester grew rapidly and many new houses were built
outside the walls. It was known for silverworking, leadworking and shipbuilding.
The first stagecoach began running between Chester and London in 1657 and during
the 18th century Chester became a major stagecoach stopping place.
The railway reached Chester in 1840 and Central Station was built in 1848.
The town continued to build its infrastructure and attractions throughout the
20th century; Chester zoo opened in 1931, a new shopping precinct was built
in 1965, St Martins Gate was built in 1966, the Gateway opened in 1968, an inner
ring road was built in 1972, and the Chester Heritage Centre opened in 1975.
