Mini guide to Chesterfield

Located in the east of Derbyshire county, Chesterfield has been a market town since the 12th century and boasts some unique architecture and pleasant countryside.

With its fascinating crooked spire, the 14th century St Mary's and All Saints Church is the town's main scenic attraction. The twisting of the spire has been caused by a combination of high winds and poor bracing. While the church is open year round, access to the tower section is on designated dates only.

The famous Open Market is held on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, with a flea market on Thursdays. The market dates from the 1100s, and often there is a variety of enthralling street entertainment. The other markets spread around the town include the charming 1857 Market Hall, now refurbished with specialist shops. There is a town museum on Coronation Street.

Chesterfield has a variety of accommodation and several excellent pubs and restaurants. Those searching for bargains away from the popular market areas should take a stroll through the 'Shambles,' narrow streets off the Market Place. Queens Park offers a welcome respite from the busy streets, featuring a boating lake, walks and summer bands.

Nearby are a number of interesting destinations for day trips. Along the A632 towards Bolsover is the 12th century Bolsover Castle (rebuilt in 1613), while close to the border with Nottinghamshire at Doe Lea lies Hardwick Hall, an Elizabethan house featuring six towers and extensive use of glass. Nature lovers can head for the walks and lake of Grassmere Country Park (B6038) or the lovely Renishaw Hall Gardens (A619 then A6135).

Chesterfield is well served by transportation networks. From London, take the M1 motorway, exiting at Junction 29 or 30. From Sheffield (north) or Derby (south) use the A61, while the A6 then A619 leads from Buxton. There are regular local and long distance bus services, with regular train services to London, Sheffield, Derby, Manchester and beyond. The nearest airports are East Midlands (near Derby) and Manchester.
