Colwyn Bay Hotels
Mini guide to Colwyn Bay
Colwyn Bay lies on the northwest coast of Wales facing the Irish Sea. Nearby there
are many beautiful sandy beaches, some of which are award winning.
From the bay there is a long promenade with a wide walkway which follows the
sweep of the coast through Rhos-on-Sea to Penrhyn Bay; it gives easy access
to many unspoilt beaches and makes for a nice stroll. If you get tired along
the way you can stop for refreshments at one of the many stalls dotted along
the promenade. For the more energetic there is a cycle track and various slipways
jutting off from the promenade where you can go fishing or hire jet skis and
sailing boats. There are also several nearby golf courses and a leisure centre
at Eiras, which includes tennis and squash courts and an athletics stadium.
On the beach at Rhos-on-Sea is the tiny 6th century St Trillo Chapel measuring
just six-feet wide and built over a holy well. It is alleged that Madoc ap Owain
Gwynedd began his journey to America from here in 1170, more than three centuries
before Columbus. Rhos-on-Sea is also home to Britain's longest running permanent
puppet theatre.
Just out of town is the famous Welsh Mountain Zoo, while nearby Snowdonia National
Park offers rugged countryside and hiking. There are also many National Trust
properties and castles to visit in the local area. The closest of these is the
magnificent Conwy Castle at Conwy. Built between 1283 and 1289 by King Edward
I, the huge castle springs from a massive rock overlooking the Conwy Estuary
and was one of the key fortresses in his 'iron ring' of castles which he built
to subdue the Welsh. It has eight massive towers and huge walls topped by battlements
which offer stunning views of the mountains and sea. The castle is amazingly
well preserved and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Conwy itself
is one of the finest classic walled towns in the world and is surrounded by
a three quarters of a mile long defensive wall with 22 towers along its length.
There is plenty of accommodation in Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea ranging from
five-star hotels to cosy guest houses, cottages and caravans. There is a train
station with frequent services from Cardiff and National Express coaches also
provide links to the town. To reach Colwyn Bay by car, exit the M56 and follow
the A55 expressway.
