Geography of Coventry

Coventry is located in the West Midlands, in the heartland of Britain. In terms
of geography, industry, culture and ethnicity, the West Midlands is one of the
UK's most diverse regions. The West Midlands urban core comprises of Birmingham,
Solihull, Coventry, Lichfield, Stoke-on-Trent, Wolverhampton, Sandwell, Dudley,
Walsall, Telford and Wrekin, while the rural areas encompassed are the shire
counties of Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Warwickshire.
Much of Coventry's natural geography was destroyed by the heavy bombing during
WW II. Historically, Coventry was surrounded by a town wall and gates, but much
of the town wall was demolished in 1662, on the restoration of Charles II. However,
some sections survived, including the section which enclosed Bablake College
and chapel within the town. This length from Spon (Bablake) to Hill Street gate
was built in the 1390s, but now only a small part can be seen from the car park
in Lower Holyhead Road, and also in the side of 190 Spon Street, facing the
churchyard. Spon Gate was demolished in 1771, and it is thought that Hill Street
Gate was demolished at the same time. A section of the wall has been reconstructed
in front of 1 and 2 Spon Street, and a strip of wall can also be seen running
diagonally across Queen Victoria Road.
Coventry is located within a fairly built-up region of Britain.
