What to see by foot: Coventry
    
Coventry Cathedral is famed for having not just one, but three cathedrals:
the ruins of St. Mary's, destroyed by Henry VIII; medieval St Michael's, destroyed
in WW II bombing raids; and its new replacement, consecrated in 1962. In fact,
St. Michael's boasted the third tallest spire in England, after Salisbury and
Norwich. After the bombing raid destroyed the cathedral, an international competition
was held in 1947 for architects to submit designs to re-build the cathedral.
The interior of the cathedral is impressive, with various tapestries and sculptures
and the combination of the old and new is extraordinary.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a focus for the city's heritage. The
award-winning Godiva City exhibition, one thousand years of Coventry's history,
told through historical treasures, interactive games and archive film is fascinating.
There are also a wide range of changing exhibitions and displays.
Museum of British Rail Transport boasts the largest collection of British made
road transport vehicles in the world. It showcases historic cars and motorcycles,
with period street scenes and a 'Sights and Sounds of the Coventry Blitz' exhibition.
The museum also houses a vast collection of rally and racing cars, as well as
vintage motorcycles.
The Coventry Toy Museum has a vast collection of toys dating from 1740 to 1980
including trains, dolls, doll's houses and games. Housed in the 14th century
Whitefriars Monastery Gatehouse, this museum is full of character.
Coombe Country Park has been painstakingly constructed over almost ten centuries
to reach its present splendour. A great day out, it pays to take time to explore
the gardens, woodland and lakeside, with its historic surroundings.
