Historical interest: Coventry

Coventry dates back to 1043, when it was designated as a centre of commerce
by Leofric, Earl of Mercia, the husband of Lady Godiva. By the end of the 14th
century, Coventry was the fourth most powerful city in England. The city had
enormous wealth, with the wool trade being a mainstay for Coventry for some
500 years and as a centre of pilgrimage. During the Civil War, the city's Church
of St. John became a prison for captured Royalists, giving rise to the phrase
'being sent to Coventry', meaning banished from society.
In the 1800s new industries replaced a failing trade in silk and ribbon weaving
and clock making. Engineering became a mainstay for Coventry. Daimler and Humber
set up the first of many car factories in 1896. Today, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and
Rover have plants in Coventry. In both world wars Coventry engineering was turned
to war production and it was the city's engineering prowess that lead to its
near total destruction from a bombing raid on November 14, 1940. Only a few
more than two dozen buildings were untouched by the fire that rained from the
sky. In fact, Coventry was subjected to the single most concentrated attack
on a British city in World War II.
Although during the 1970s and 1980s, Coventry plummeted into recession, with
factory closures and steep unemployment, Coventry now boasts two major universities:
the University of Warwick and the University of Coventry. The city's business
and science parks are some of the most successful in the Midlands and links
with Europe are thriving.
