Mini guide to Dewsbury

The town of Dewsbury is situated in the county of West Yorkshire and lies on the River Calder. It's famous for being a centre for the 'shoddy' industry, which involves the recycling of old woollen articles into uniforms and blankets. As a tourist destination it is not especially popular although the beautiful Yorkshire Dales that surround it are reason enough to make a trip here. The town can also serve as a base from where you can visit some of the other fantastic places the county has to offer.

Dewsbury's most historic building is its Minster, a building that has parts dating back to Anglo Saxon times. Nowadays it is a multifunctional attraction serving as a community and conference centre, concert hall and place of Christian worship.
A heritage centre inside the Minster gives visitors more information about its historic past.

The town has a busy indoor market from Monday to Saturday; meanwhile, an adjacent open air market is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Both markets sell a wide range of new and second hand goods and are extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. The town also has a great museum which gives visitors an insight into the history of Dewsbury and the surrounding area.

Dewsbury has a huge Asian community and not surprisingly this is reflected in the type of businesses the town offers. Indian restaurants are in abundance and are popular with all members of the community. As well as traditional British eateries, the town also offers Chinese, Italian and French options. Entertainment in Dewsbury is limited and consists of a few pubs and a selection of reasonably good bars, but the nightclubs leave much to be desired. There's a theatre, but no cinema, so for a night out at the movies you will have to travel to Leeds.

Nearby Huddersfield is a great place to visit if you feel like a day out from Dewsbury. Famous for its wool industry, the town has a variety of attractions including East Riddlesden Hall, Ravensknowle Park, the Tolson Memorial Museum and Huddersfield Art Gallery. The Art Gallery, featuring traditional and contemporary genres and works by the likes of Turner and Gainsborough, is especially worth a visit.

Dewsbury is served by the M1 motorway, while Dewsbury Station has rail connections to Leeds, which in turn is connected to other major UK cities. Leeds Bradford International Airport offers the nearest air connection.
