Mini guide to Dornoch
Dornoch is a fairly remote town in the far northeast of Scotland which is surrounded
by the National Scenic Area of the Dornoch Firth in the Scottish Highlands. Visitors
mainly come to Dornoch for the peace and quiet, and there are several notable
buildings here as well as the Royal Dornoch Golf Course.
The main landmark in Dornoch is the fine 13th century cathedral where Madonna
and Guy Ritchie were married, while a 16th century bishop's palace, now a hotel,
and the old town jail and courthouse are also outstanding. Another highlight
in Dornoch is the disused one hundred-year-old Dornoch Light Railway line that
is now used as a walking trail.
Dornoch town centre is actually a conservation area with a collection of sandstone
cottages and looks more akin to a scene in the Cotswold's rather than a Scottish
Highland town. Curious winding streets offer quiet exploration and the town
square is delightful. Now a private country club, Andrew Carnegie used to inhabit
the Skibo Castle in Dornoch and he established the town's excellent library.
There is some quality accommodation in Dornoch and a wide range of shops to
browse, as well as two excellent golf courses including the famed Royal Dornoch
Golf Course. Dornoch also has a superb sandy beach perfect for balmy summer
days and there is some great walking in the town and surrounding areas.
Those who are into walking and so inclined can do the town Heritage Walk which
covers all the attractions in the town, while the walk to Loch Fleet, to the
north of Dornoch, offers further adventure. Farther afield is the market town
of Inverness, with its excellent shopping and ancient castle, while eerie Loch
Ness is also within reach.
Dornoch is an hour's drive from Inverness along the main A9 highway and buses
and trains run from Glasgow, Edinburgh and London to Inverness, from where local
buses connect to Dornoch every hour. Inverness Airport is the closest to Dornoch,
from where you can take a train to Tain and then a bus or taxi into the town.
