Mini guide to Dunblane
Set on the Allan Water River in the centre of Scotland in southern Perthshire,
Dunblane is a small city famed for its impressive Gothic cathedral, which sits
on the old site of the Celtic church of St Blane. Also a popular holiday spa town
in Victorian times, Dunblane town features a warren of streets and parks.
The 13th century Gothic cathedral, one of Scotland's foremost buildings, is
Dunblane's biggest attraction, complete with bell tower, magnificent stained
glass windows and a Celtic stone from the 9th century. Originally built in the
13th century, the cathedral was later altered in the 15th century and restored
in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The other major feature in Dunblane is the Cathedral Museum that showcases
the city and the cathedral through articles and papers. The museum garden offers
respite and has an ancient well, while the excellent library of Bishop Robert
Leighton is also on the grounds.
A walk around the town itself will reveal a web of narrow streets lined with
old town houses dating from the 18th century and many cafés, restaurants
and traditional pubs, such as the Stirling Arms. The Allan Water riverbank and
several parks scattered around the town are ideal for strolling.
Dunblane lies within the Trossachs National Park, which boasts delightful landscapes
littered with ancient villages, numerous lochs and hiking trails. Nearby Stirling,
where Robert the Bruce famously fought in the Battle of Bannockburn, lies just
to the south of Dunblane and is dominated by its castle, while the attraction-packed
cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are less than an hour's drive to the south.
The M9 motorway provides access from Edinburgh, while the M80 comes in from
Glasgow. Trains run between Glasgow and Dunblane, and Edinburgh and Dunblane
via Stirling hourly. Local buses run from Goosecroft bus station in Stirling
to Dunblane and National Express coaches from London, Edinburgh and Glasgow
arrive regularly. Edinburgh International Airport is the nearest for those arriving
by air and is conveniently located near the M9 motorway.
