What to see by foot: Dundee

Dundee has a long association with the sea and this is one of the core attractions
of the city. Dundee is home to Captain Scott's famous Royal Research Ship Discovery,
which today is a floating museum at Discovery Quay on Discovery Point. This
ship was used on Scott's polar expeditions and is why Dundee is known as the
'City of Discovery'.
Nearby, at the Victoria Docks, you will see the HMS Frigate Unicorn, the oldest
British-built ship afloat. This 46-gun ship was commissioned in 1824 by the
Royal Navy and is now fully restored, with various displays showcasing its history.
McManus Galleries is a remarkable Gothic building housing one of Scotland's
most impressive collections of fine and decorative art. Highlights include paintings
by James McIntosh Patrick and works by Landseer and Millais. The gallery also
has an archaeology gallery that goes back to the Iron Age and the Picts. It
even boasts an Egyptian tomb. There is also a local history gallery.
The Verdant Works is a heritage museum that showcases the history of Dundee
and jute. The refurbished mill, known as Jute House, is dedicated to the history
of jute, which sustained Dundee throughout of most the 19th and 20th centuries.
Displays show how raw jute was processed and then woven on looms. In the courtyard
are 18th century street games, such as stilts, whips and tops for the children
to enjoy.
