Durham boasts a magnificent Norman castle and cathedral, both of which are a World Heritage Site. Downhill from the castle and cathedral, you can still trace Durham's Mediaeval layout in the narrow winding streets that make the town compact enough to explore on foot. Located on the banks of the Wear River, Durham and Durham County have a lot to offer away from the bustling city centre, with shady wooded riverbanks, gardens, parks, trails and boat trips.

There is a wide range of shops, including the refurbished Victorian Indoor Market, with over 80 stalls, and the new Prince Bishops development for the discerning shopper. Much of Durham's shopping area is closed to traffic, making it a walking and shopping haven. The cobbled Market Place, filled with street entertainers, particularly during the summer months, has a quaint feel. There is also a monthly Farmer's Market, full of local specialities and worth browsing. Durham's inns, restaurants and cafés offer something for everyone with food from all over the world. Being a university town, there is plenty to choose from, 17th century almshouses to an Internet café, whatever takes your fancy and fits your budget.

The Racecourse on the Wear River is a favourite area for walks, but horse races have not been held here since the 19th century. However, the Racecourse is now being used as a track and field venue, hosting regular cross-country events. The stretch of river by the Racecourse is famous for the annual Durham Regatta, held in June. It was founded in 1834, making it older than the Henley Regatta. It is a huge event, attracting more than 600 crews from all over the world. Another Durham original event is the annual Miners' Gala that takes place on the second Saturday in July, where ex-miners and their families still gather and socialise and attend a special service at the cathedral. Colliery bands lead processions and banners are proudly paraded through the streets.

Newcastle and Teesside International Airports are within easy access of Durham and provide regular domestic and international flights. Durham can also easily reached by train from London and other major cities.
