Durham does not have its own airport, but both Newcastle and Teesside International
Airports are only 30 minutes drive away. Both airports are served by regular
domestic and international flights.
At nearby Tyneside, ferry services operate to North Shields throughout the
year to Scandinavia, Netherlands and Germany.
County Durham is served by several major trunk roads. From the south the A1,
a major north-south trunk road, provides easy access, while from the north,
either the A1 coastal route or the A68 cross-country route through Northumberland
and Border country provide easy access. From the west, the A66 provides a scenic
cross-Pennine route from the Lake District and the M6 Motorway. Durham is roughly
300 miles from London and 125 miles from Edinburgh.
Durham station lies on the UK East Coast main line, one stop south of Newcastle.
There are roughly 16 trains daily to Durham from London King's Cross Station,
with a journey time of about 3 hours. There are 60 InterCity trains daily that
connect Durham to other major cities in the UK.
