What to see by car: Durham

Beamish Open Air Museum is one of the leading tourist attractions in the north
of England. Located about 10 miles outside of Durham, this museum recreates
life as it was in the 1800s and 1900s. Visitors can stroll into shops, pubs,
a newspaper office, sweet shop, and garage. Guided tours are given by staff
in period costumes. There is also a real drift mine in the Colliery Village
and a row of pit cottages to show how miners and their families lived.
Killhope Lead Mining Centre, roughly 20 miles outside of Durham, showcases
a fully restored 19th century lead mine. Here you can experience first-hand
the working life of lead miners and their families in the Pennine Dales.
Causey Arch near Stanley, 10 miles outside of Durham, is the oldest surviving
single-span railway bridge in the world and was built between 1725 and 1726.
It stands 80 feet above a wooded gorge and is the main feature of a picnic area
and woodland walk, with displays explaining the early waggonways and a replica
of an 18th century coal waggon.
The John & Josephine Bowes Museum, roughly 20 miles from Durham, is a French
style chateau housing one of the finest and largest collections of French and
Spanish paintings in Britain. The chateau is furnished in period furniture,
ceramics, textiles and antiques. The beautiful garden is also worth a visit.
Nearby, is Raby Castle and Gardens the home of Lord Barnard. It is one of the
most impressive medieval castles in England, set in a 200-acre deer park. Once
the seat of the famous Nevills, Raby has been home to Lord Barnard's family
for over 370 years.
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's Washington, roughly 8 miles from Durham,
is a great day out for the whole family. Here you see, feed and learn all about
wetland birds and the conservation efforts that are being undertaken to save
the wetlands and the birds living there.
