Mini guide to Edinburgh

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland and a World Heritage Site, is dominated
by the impressive 11th century castle standing proud over the city. It is a
thriving political, financial, cultural and commercial centre that has maintained
its historical charm.
Every step taken in Edinburgh is a revelation, from winding alleyways to ancient
courtyards. At the entrance to the castle is the top end of the Royal Mile,
one of the oldest streets in Edinburgh that has retained much of its historical
atmosphere. Part way down this famous street is St. Giles' Cathedral, The High
Kirk of Edinburgh, which is generally regarded as the mother church of Presbyterianism.
At the other end of the Royal Mile is the baroque Palace of Holyrood house,
which serves as a reminder of Scotland's volatile history.
Many daytrips can be made from Edinburgh to explore the beautiful countryside
and charming villages. The old London Road leads out of the city along the East
Lothian coast through Musselburgh, where the Romans once sent their legions,
to the picturesque harbour at Cockenzie. From there you can travel past miles
of sandy coastline, and visit spectacularly beautiful beaches.
Edinburgh boasts many entertainment options from fine old pubs to a wealth
of excellent cafés, bistros and restaurants. Edinburgh's nightlife is
second-to-none and has many bars and nightclubs to suit everyone's taste, as
well as numerous cinemas and theatrical performances. If shopping is what you
have in mind, stroll down Princes Street, or check out the shops along The Royal
Mile. If you are visiting Edinburgh in August, make sure to participate in the
Edinburgh Festival, a four-week art and culture extravaganza.
Access to Edinburgh is easy, with many transport options. Although the nearby
international airport has limited options, there is also Glasgow Prestwich airport
within a hour's drive. Trains also depart hourly for London and destinations
south, via the east and west coast.
