What to see by car: Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the perfect location from which to visit the surrounding countryside and villages, and many daytrips can be made from the city.

The old London Road leads out of the city along the East Lothian coast through Musselburgh, where the Romans once sent their legions, to the picturesque harbour at Cockenzie. From there you can travel past miles of sandy coastline, and visit spectacularly beautiful beaches at Gullane and Yellowcraigs, as well as the castle at Dirleton.

Two great historic resort towns lay along the coast-North Berwick and Dunbar. Between them lies a great expanse of wildlife parkland, the John Muir Country Park. It's the perfect place to explore the natural history of a spectacular coastline.

St. Abbs Head, situated midway Edinburgh and the Northumberland town of Alnwick, is a headland on which the remnants of Fast Castle are perched. Here amongst this forgotten stretch of the North Sea coast, the broken cliffs rear above crystal clear water. The picturesque fishing village of St. Abbs boasts a clifftop nature reserve with a huge seabird population.
Seven miles south of Edinburgh is Dalkeith Country Park, a beautiful rural estate surrounding the lovely Dalkeith Palace. And only an hour's drive from Edinburgh is the riverside Roslin Glen, a wooded ravine complete with semi-ruined castle.
