Edinburgh has been inhabited since around 1500 BC, making it one of the longest
continuously populated places in northern Europe. In fact, recent archaeological
excavations at Edinburgh Castle have uncovered evidence that Bronze-Age inhabitants
were living on the rocky crag on which the castle stands as long ago as 850
BC. Two thousand years ago, during the Iron Age, the rock was a hill-fort settlement.
Over the millennia the city grew in importance, and by the end of the 15th
century was established as Scotland's capital. In 1566, nearly one year after
marrying her second husband, Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to their child,
Prince James, in Edinburgh Castle. In 1568, she fled to England, leaving behind
a divided nation and her infant son James, who later became the King of Scotland.
Scotland's links with England became closer after 1603, when James VI of Scotland
became James I of England, effectively uniting the two crowns. Edinburgh ceased
to be the principal site of the royal court, although it did continue to have
its own Parliament.
In 1707, the Act of Union (uniting the Scottish and English parliaments) knocked
a nail into the coffin of Scotland's independence, although Scotland retained
its own Church and separate legal and educational systems. However, with the
re-introduction of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, Edinburgh has become a centre
of political power once again.
