Mini guide to Evesham

As one of County Worcestershire's many rural market towns, Evesham sits between Worcester, Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon and is largely known for its development as an agricultural centre. It's probably fair to say that Evesham isn't by any means a tourist epicentre; however, its proximity to both the Cotswolds and the aforementioned towns makes it an ideal place from which to explore scenic Worcestershire.

The town has many historical buildings although some of the most important ones have been reduced to ruins. Evesham Abbey, founded in 709 AD by Saint Ecgwin, is all but gone, but the fine 16th century bell tower at the twin churches of All Saints and St Lawrence and Abbot Lichfield's remains.

Take the time to visit some of the other remaining sites of historic interest while you explore the town. The Almonry, for example, is a building dating back to the 15th century, during which time it was home to the Abbey Almoner, an important town figure charged with helping the poor and needy and providing hospitality to visitors to the Abbey.

Aside from its historical attractions, the town sits on the River Avon and many activities take place in this area, including organised boat trips and the option of hiring your own rowing boat.

As well as a good selection of traditional British eateries, Evesham has international establishments offering Italian, Indian, French and Chinese food. Nightlife in the town is relatively tame with an emphasis on traditional pubs and inns. The town's only nightclub, Marylins, tries to cater for all by representing a wide range of musical scenes.

For a day trip out of Evesham, nearby Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps the most popular option. Most notably the former home of William Shakespeare, Stratford has a wealth of attractions including a butterfly farm, Anne Hathaway's cottage, the Teddy Bear Museum, Wellesbourne Water Mill and Stratford Brass Rubbing Centre, not forgetting the Shakespearian attractions which include five houses connected to the famous bard and his family.

Evesham can be reached by road via the M1, M5, M50, M40 and M42 motorways.
There are regular rail services to and from London and connections to Worcester to Birmingham. Birmingham International Airport provides the nearest air connection.
