Mini guide to Exeter

Located in the lovely Devon countryside, Exeter is teeming with students, adding a lively element to this charming and historic town. It is also a good launching point for exploring Southwest England.

Exeter's old walled city is situated on the banks of the river Exe. The compact center is easily explored on foot, and most visitors first head for the magnificent medieval St Peter's cathedral. It stands on the site of a 7th century monastery and is skirted by a lovely green and cobbled street. Beneath this is a series of underground tunnels, which add a unique attraction to the city. Dating from the 14th century, and built to bring water to the centre, they are the only tunnels in Britain that are open to the public.

The 900-year-old former Benedictine Priory on Fore Street is another worthy historic attraction. It has, in its past, been a guesthouse for monks, and a royal residence. Nearby is the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (Queen Street), which has an impressive and varied collection, dating from the Elizabethan period.

Also within walking distance is the Quayside, a lovely waterside area developed from 17th and 18th century warehouses. It features shops, outdoor cafes and restaurants, and includes a crafts guild, where you can pick up glasswork, jewellery, metalwork and leather goods.

Famed for its stone tors and rolling moors, Exmoor National Park is worth exploring and can be easily reached by car. Alternatively, a day trip up-river on the River Exe reveals the medieval ruins of the original Exe Bridge, while the port of Topsham, with its quaint Dutch Houses, waterfront and museum, is found on the Exe estuary.

Although Exeter International Airport is serviced by selected UK cities and a few continental airports, the options to and from London Heathrow are far better, and trains conveniently depart from London Paddington station to Exeter every hour (duration: 2.5 hours). By car the M5 motorway terminates in Exeter making it a simple drive from Bristol and the M4. National Express buses also frequently link the city to the UK network.
