Mini guide to Fleetwood

Fleetwood is situated on the Lancashire coast at the southern end of Morecambe Bay, the second largest bay in the UK. It lies about 10 miles north of Blackpool and 20 miles northwest of Preston, and is the only town in the UK to possess three lighthouses, two of which are still in use today.

Founded in the 1830s by Sir Peter Hesketh, much of the centre of the town was designed by Decimus Burton. The old centre of Fleetwood is the mount, from which the town's streets radiate outwards like spokes on a wheel. The town was originally a major fishing port but the Cod Wars of the 1970s and cutbacks in fishing quotas during the '80s and '90s have decimated the local fishing industry. Now on the site of the old docks is the Freeport Shopping Village, which is situated next to a Marina and offers 40 outlet shops stocking a variety of famous brands, many at discount prices.

Architecturally interesting are the town's three lighthouses, all built in 1840. Wyre Lighthouse on the edge of North Wharf was built by a blind engineer, Alexander Mitchell, and was the first lighthouse to ever be built upon piles placed on the seabed; however, it has unfortunately fallen into a state of disrepair. The Lower Lighthouse is on the shoreline 30 feet above the watermark, while the Upper Lighthouse is much taller and closer to the centre of town. If captains of incoming vessels line up the two lighthouses, they can guarantee that they are following a deep channel.

Fleetwood is home to a number of annual events, including the Fleetwood Beer Festival, Fylde Folk Festival and most famous of all, Tram Sunday. Fleetwood was the first town in the UK to have electrified trams and this festival celebrates all forms of transport including trams, coaches, buses and even tanks, drawing participants and enthusiasts from all over the country.

Fleetwood has many guesthouses and some hotels. During the summer season many people choose to stay here as a cheaper and quieter alternative to Blackpool.

To access Fleetwood by car, exit the M6 motorway at junction 32 and join the M55 until you reach junction 3, from where you should take the A585 to Fleetwood. National Express coaches offer services to Fleetwood or you can catch a train or flight to Blackpool and then travel to Fleetwood by bus or tram.
