Mini guide to Gateshead

Located on the south bank of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead is an interesting town full of wonderful museums and magnificent modern architecture.

Gateshead is steeped in industrial history and many of the town's attractions celebrate contributions made to modern-day society. Shipley Art Gallery's Made in Gateshead exhibition features a permanent display which documents the past and present manufacturing industries of the borough, while the Bowes Railway, which connected numerous collieries from the 1820s until the 1970s, today displays the only two preserved rope-operated incline railways in the world. Another historic railway, the Tanfield, runs along a line dating from 1725, and crosses one of the oldest surviving railway bridges in the world, at Causey Arch. Both railways offer steam train rides throughout the year. Other reminders of Gateshead's industrial heritage can be found at Path Head Water Mill and Winlaton Cottage Forge.

Gateshead is enjoying a recent boom in modernization. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge - the first opening bridge to be built across the River Tyne for more than 100 years - has attracted world-wide attention because of its unique design. The world-first design is the latest addition to the Tyne's famous collection of bridges - which have given the area one of the most instantly recognisable skylines in Europe. Nearby is Britain's largest and most impressive sculpture 'The Angel of the North,' rising 20 metres over the hilltop landscape.

Gateshead Quays lies at the heart of Tyneside next to the world famous Tyne Bridge and features cutting edge, world class arts, leisure and accommodation venues.

Had enough of the industrial revolution? Head out to the Great North Forest for some fantastic recreational activities. The vast parklands are perfect for walking, cycling, hiking, camping and horseback riding. Of course, for more urban attractions and entertainment, Newcastle is just 30 minutes away.

Gateshead can be accessed via the A1 (M) or A19 (from the south), A69 (from the west), or A1 from the north. There are half-hourly trains to Newcastle, where connections can be made to destinations such as London (2 hours, 40 minutes), Birmingham (3 hours, 30 minutes) and Edinburgh (1 hour, 20 minutes). Newcastle International Airport serves flights from main European cities and connections from London's air transportation hubs.
