Mini guide to Glasgow

Long famous for ironworks and steelworks, Glasgow is a modern city that has
retained its splendor to become Scotland's cultural capital. It was also chosen
as Europe's Culture Capital for 1990.
The area of Medieval Glasgow in the northeastern part of the city is where
St. Mungo arrived in 543 AD and built his church. At the top of High Street
stands the 12th century Cathedral of St. Kentigern, where St. Mungo is buried,
and one of Britain's largest Victorian cemeteries - the Necropolis you enter
by crossing over the Bridge of Sighs. Nearby is Glasgow Green, which opens onto
the River Clyde and has been a public park since 1662. Today, vastly restored
Medieval Glasgow is the best place for strolls.
Close to Glasgow is the 40-acre Botanic Garden, an extensive collection of
tropical plants and herb gardens; it's acclaimed especially for its spectacular
orchids and begonias. Alternatively, Linn Park is 212 acres of pine and woodland,
with many scenic walks along the river, plus an old snuff mill, pony rides,
and a children's zoo. Meanwhile, a short drive away is the burgh of Prestwick,
renowned for its sandy beaches, excellent golf courses, and views of Ayr Bay
and the Isle of Arran. Only a few miles from the town is Alloway, the birthplace
of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns.
Glasgow is an exciting city that has something for everyone, from a wonderful
selection of cafés and restaurants featuring British fare and international
cuisines to cinemas offering the latest films and contemporary art galleries
featuring the talents of local artists. The city's nightlife is second-to-none
and there are a number of excellent pubs, bars and nightclubs to choose from.
Glasgow is the proud home of the Scottish Opera as well as the Scottish Ballet,
which hold performances at the Theatre Royal. Meanwhile in winter, the Royal
Scottish National Orchestra offers Saturday concerts at the Glasgow Royal Concert
Hall. If you want to go shopping, Central Glasgow is the major shopping district
and includes such venues as the Princes Square Shopping Mall.
Glasgow is easily reached from the south by taking the M74 motorway, a continuation
of the M8 that goes right into the city. Alternatively, trains leave London's
Euston and King's Cross Stations frequently throughout the day (the journey
takes about 5 1/2 hours).
