What to see by foot: Glasgow

Famous for ironworks and steelworks, Glasgow is a modern city that has retained
its splendor to become Scotland's cultural capital, as well as achieving the
distinction of European Cultural Capital in 1990.
The area of Medieval Glasgow in the northeastern part of the city is where
St. Mungo arrived in 543 AD and built his church. At the top of High Street
stands the 12th century Cathedral of St. Kentigern, where St. Mungo is buried
in one of Britain's largest Victorian cemeteries. It's known as the Necropolis
and you enter by crossing over the Bridge of Sighs. Glasgow Green, opening onto
the River Clyde, has been a public park since 1662. Today, vastly restored Medieval
Glasgow is the best place for strolls.
Another splendid place to walk is the Clyde Walkway along the Clyde River,
stretching for two miles downstream from King Albert Bridge, at the western
end of Glasgow Green,. The river itself is crossed by several bridges, one named
for Queen Victoria and another for her consort, Albert. On these waters, Glasgow
shipped its manufactured goods around the world. Along the river is the Glasgow
Science Centre, featuring innovative laboratories, multimedia and science theatres,
and interactive exhibits.
The Merchant City area west of the High Street, which was once occupied by
tobacco barons, is not only home to an excellent shopping complex, Argyle Arcade,
but also is the site of City Hall and Strathclyde University. Here there are
some of Britain's most elegant Georgian and Victorian buildings as well as Greek
revival churches. While the city centre of Glasgow is the major shopping district,
the West End mixes culture, art, and parks, and is dominated by Glasgow University.
One of Glasgow's best museums is the Glasgow Art Gallery and Museum, which
boasts a superb collection of Dutch and Italian old masters, including Giorgione
and Rembrandt. Another excellent gallery is the Hunterian Art Gallery, which
owns the artistic estate of James McNeill Whistler, with some 60 of his paintings
bestowed by his sister-in-law.
