What to see by car: Glasgow

Glasgow is a good gateway for exploring the heart of Robbie Burns country. The nearby town of Paisley became a famous name in the weaving trade during the Industrial Revolution; in fact, the Paisley shawl was created here. The town's impressive 12th century abbey was restored in the early 20th century and features a superb stone-vaulted roof.

Close to Glasgow is the 40-acre botanic garden, an extensive collection of tropical plants and herb gardens; it's acclaimed especially for its spectacular orchids and begonias. Alternatively, Linn Park is 212 acres of pine and woodland, with many scenic walks along the river, plus an old snuff mill, pony rides, and a children's zoo. Meanwhile, Gleniffer Braes Country Park covers 1,300 acres of woodland and moorland, and has picnic areas plus an adventure playground.
A short drive away from Glasgow is the ocean, and the many towns that dot the coastline. The royal burgh of Ayr is the most popular resort on Scotland's west coast. Facing the Isle of Arran and the Firth of Clyde, Ayr is 35 miles southwest of Glasgow. A busy market town, it several miles of beach, with steamer cruises, fishing, and golf. Ayr also boasts the top racecourse in Scotland.

Only two miles north of Ayr is the burgh of Prestwick, renowned for its sandy beaches, excellent golf courses, and views of Ayr Bay and the Isle of Arran. Meanwhile, some 2 miles south of Ayr is Alloway, the birthplace of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns.
